About Brook

Brook believes in a society where everyone is supported to live healthy lives, free from inequality and strengthened by fulfilling relationships. For over sixty years, Brook has been a pioneering force, transforming lives and communities by tirelessly championing safe and accessible sexual health, mental health and wellbeing support.

We believe that excellent sexual health, mental health and wellbeing is a right. Our unique offer combines clinical services, relationships and sex education, outreach in community settings, wellbeing programmes and counselling.

In 2023/24 we supported 1.32 million people through our frontline services. We delivered 3,500 mental health and wellbeing interventions, supported 121,326 young people through our education and wellbeing work and 130,703 people benefitted from our education, training and consultancy.  In 2024, we opened two community mental health hubs in Blackburn and Cornwall with plans to expand to other geographical locations.

About the role

Our Board of Trustees bring a diverse wealth of skills and experience to Brook; they are committed to our values and are ambitious for Brook’s future. We are in the last year of our current strategic plan and our new strategic plan for 2026 – 2029 is being developed to launch in March 2026. As a trustee, you will contribute to the successful delivery of this strategy and build on our organisational strengths. You will be committed to Brook’s mission, be an excellent ambassador and bring expertise and networks that add value to the Board.

Brook is particularly looking to appoint individuals who have experience, knowledge and skills in the following areas:

Charity finance

It continues to be a challenging time for the charity sector with 80% of charities exploring cost-cutting measures. We are looking for a trustee who has experience and knowledge of charity finance and the current income challenges.

Young people’s mental health

In 2023/24, we saw increasing numbers of people with complex mental health issues and safeguarding concerns. We are keen to expand our work and expertise in this area so that we can further support young people.

Violence against women & girls

At least one in 12 women are victims of violence against women and girls every year with over one in four women being a survivor of sexual assault in their lifetimes. The true figure is likely to be much higher. We are looking for a trustee who will be able to support Brook to expand our work in this vital area.

About the Board

Our Board works well as a team and in partnership with the senior executive team.  We have a Code of Good Governance and work in accordance with the Charity Governance Code. We provide induction, ongoing training, the opportunity to be mentored by another trustee and a supportive environment.  The profiles of our current trustees can be viewed at https://www.brook.org.uk/about-brook/our-people/#trustees

Equality and diversity

Brook is committed to equality of opportunity at all levels; we support and encourage under-represented groups and we value diversity. We are seeking trustees from a wide range of backgrounds who will bring a fresh perspective to the Board.  Brook is keen to reflect the diversity of the communities with whom we work and happy to support first-time trustees.

How to apply
